Chelsea stars Jorginho and Kepa Arrizabalaga combined to hand Arsenal the win at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. A horrendous error from the midfielder saw the goalkeeper struggle to clear his lines.
Chelsea suffered defeat at the hands of Arsenal on Wednesday night in a match that embodied the major error that gifted the only goal.
Emile Smith Rowe scored after a horrendous mix-up at the back from Jorginho and Kepa – two players brought in from the wilderness by Thomas Tuchel.
Under Frank Lampard, the duo were largely absent and were heading for the exit door but the German manager has handed them both a lifeline.
Jorginho, in particular, who has been a key performer since the 47-year-old took over – but the former Napoli star showed why Lampard was right to leave him on the sidelines.
It was his huge error that gave Arsenal the lead in the first-half in a match devoid of any real quality.
The Italy international did not even look up after passing back to where he assumed Kepa Arrizabalaga would be.
But the Spaniard, who was inexplicably miles out of his goal, was nowhere to be seen and in the end the goalkeeper did well to prevent an own goal.
However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on the scene to roll the ball across to Emile Smith Rowe, who netted his first away goal for the Gunners in the Premier League.
Kepa appears to be second-choice at the club now, despite being used as the cup keeper this season under Tuchel – but with an FA Cup final against Leicester to come this weekend, it would be no surprise to see Edouard Mendy named in the starting XI.
The last time Arsenal beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was 10 years ago in 2011 in a frantic 5-3 result.
Arteta was in the line-up on that day for the Gunners but this was a much more conservative scoreline.
The Blues are starting to get sick at the sight of their north London rivals – with this now the third time in a row they have lost to them.
That includes a 2-1 defeat in the FA Cup and a 3-1 loss on Boxing Day that signalled the beginning of the end for Frank Lampard.
But now Tuchel is having the same problems he predeccesor suffered from while Arteta must start to believe he has got Chelsea’s number.
