COVID-19 cases in the US has edged towards 4 million according to the latest figures. The deadly virus has now killed more than 141,000 Americans.

In Texas, Hidalgo Country is the epicentre according to CBS News.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez told CBS News: “Unfortunately, our hospital rooms look like war zones because there are just so many from so many sick people there.”

Mr Cortez issued a shelter-at-home order to residents in the county on Monday.

But Texas Governor Greg Abbott argued the order is unenforceable.

Mr Cortez said: “My job is to take care of the public health.

“We brought in a lot of refrigerated trailers to access more morgues, and their capacity is 50.

“Well in the last eight days, we have an average of 22 people die per day.”

Virus-related deaths in Texas have increased by 33 percent over the last 10 days.

In the US just nine states are seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases or are holding steady.

This comes as US President Donald Trump warned the coronavirus in America may “get worse before it gets better”.

He also urged Americans to wear face coverings saying “they’ll have an effect” and show “patriotism”.

Mr Trump spoke at the first White House coronavirus briefing for months on Tuesday.

He said: “It will probably unfortunately get worse before it gets better.

“Something I don’t like saying about things, but that’s the way it is.”

Mr Trump added: “We’re asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance, wear a mask, get a mask.

“Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact, they’ll have an effect and we need everything we can get.”

During the briefing, Mr Trump took a mask out from his pocket but did not put it on.

The president’s election competitor, Joe Biden, accused Mr Trump of having failed Americans during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Biden said: “He’s quit on you, he’s quit on this country.”
