Fast and Furious 9 is the tenth film in the franchise after the first eight, and the spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. Vin Diesel‘s character Dominic Toretto has brought his team back together again to save the world, drink Corona and hang out with his family. The Asian release of the film has given critics their first glimpse of the movie which The Hollywood Reporter says the film “sounds like more fun than it is”.
THR’s critic John Defore commented on director Justin Lin’s latest spectacle movie.
He said: “As in Lin’s last feature, the disappointing Star Trek Beyond, the director/cowriter takes a quantity-over-quality approach, throwing more action, subplots and characters into the mix than any movie needs while still leaving one with the sense that something’s missing.”
The writer added that the film makes even “less sense” considering a brand new character has been thrown into the mix: Jakob Toretto (John Cena), Dom’s estranged brother.
He added: “This new Dom/Jacob crisis is sufficient in itself, and does not require the introduction of a device that can take over every other electronic device on the planet.”
Writer David Ehrlich said: “This is, by FAR, the biggest, wildest, gravity-defying-iest Fast & & & & Furious instalment yet.”
The writer added: “(One scene towards the end is guaranteed to make your jaw drop at the gloriously braindead chutzpah of it all).”
However, he did say: “And yet, Lin and Daniel Casey’s screenplay is only able to stretch the action to such farcical heights because it offsets that spectacle by drilling into Dom’s character on a deeper level than the franchise ever has before.”
The film does not come out in the UK for another two months, on July 8, while its release in the US is next month, on June 25.
In the meantime, the cast has been casually talking about the film and the various returning characters.
Most recently Sean Boswell star Lucas Black spoke about his full return after six movies.
He told Entertainment Weekly: “There was always talk of bringing my character back. And so when they called me for [Furious] 7, you just want to know what that entails.”
Fast and Furious 9 is due out in cinemas on July 8, 2021.
