Indiana Jones 5 is due for release in 2022 with Harrison Ford playing the titular role for the very last time. The actor has previously played Dr Jones in four movies, all of which have been directed by Spielberg. The upcoming fifth movie is being directed by James Mangold, the first film in the franchise not helmed by the legendary ET director. Over the weekend it was announced Waller-Bridge has been cast in the upcoming adventure movie.

In 2018 Spielberg teased the next steps for the Indiana Jones franchise.

During an interview, he suggested the next person to pick up the hat and whip could be a woman.

He said: “We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that.”

The Ready Player One director then touched upon Ford’s future in the role.

Spielberg said: “This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure. But it will certainly continue after that.”

The director then cited the strong women that inspire him in his life, adding: “My mom was strong. She had a voice, she had a very strong opinion.

“I have been very lucky to be influenced by women, several of whom I have just loved madly – my mom and my wife.”

It was originally presumed Indy would be replaced by Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) who was introduced in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Waller-Bridge’s role has not been announced just yet, but considering Indiana Jones 5 is set in the 1960s, more than enough time has passed between films to place the British star as a replacement for Dr Jones.

Mangold commented on the new casting: “I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers. Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine.

“When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can’t help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”

Interestingly enough, Waller-Bridge has already worked with Lucasfilm in a Star Wars movie.

Waller-Bridge played droid L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

She worked alongside Alden Ehrenreich who played a young version of Ford’s galactic character, Han Solo.

The announcement of Waller-Bridge’s involvement in the movie came alongside the news that John Williams will be returning to the series as its composer.

Indiana Jones 5 is due for release on July 28, 2022.
