James Bond was parodied by Vin Diesel in xXx series – ‘It’s more realistic’ | Films | Entertainment

James Bond was at the height of its fame in the early 2000s, shortly after Pierce Brosnan appeared in his final 007 film, Die Another Day. In the same year, Diesel took on his own spy movie, titled xXx (Triple X). Although the movie had all the makings of a standard Bond film, it took some time out in the first few minutes to destroy the traditional look and feel of the spy film genre.

During the first scene of xXx fans were introduced to a spy. The nameless tuxedo-clad secret agent infiltrated a rock music venue owned by the film’s bad guy, Yorgi (Marton Csokas).

The secret agent was equipped with a grappling gun, secret disguise and gadgets.

However, the film quickly pointed out that the traditional secret agent would not be successful in xXx when the agent was effortlessly killed off by Yorgi’s men in the middle of the Rammstein concert.

In an interview at the time, Diesel revealed he felt this version of the character was a lot more “realistic”.

Diesel said at the time: “When I watched the James Bond stories I thought they were interesting, but the first thing was, in comparison… I remember thinking this guy probably had to go to college for ten years to become a secret agent.

“And that sent me [out], you know, I couldn’t see myself going to college for ten years!

“So I think the Xander Cage character felt a little bit more realistic, even in my reality.”

Pointing out more of the differences between the two characters, Diesel added: “[Xander is] a guy that is taken from the outskirts of society.”

Diesel went on: “There’s a guy who doesn’t want anything to do with the government … and is forced into a position where he is going to have learn something about heroism.

“I think that’s a more practical approach which allows the audience to be invested in his progress and journey.”

In the film, Xander was hired for his crass and clumsy way of working, making him the complete opposite of that seen in any 007 film.

In classic 007 fashion, however, Xander did go on to defeat the bad guy, save the world, and get the girl (Asia Argento as Yelena).

In the same interview, Diesel spoke candidly about creating a more “credible” character over Bond.

He revealed: “The character needed to have a certain vulnerability to make him a bit more believable, a bit more credible.

“He has to come off as a normal human being – despite the fact he does all these crazy stunts.”

Diesel changed up the standard nature of James Bond in xXx, something that could be replicated after the upcoming No Time To Die.

Later this year Daniel Craig will step down from the 007 role after 15 years and five movies in the tuxedo.

All eyes are on the next available Bond, with Netflix‘s Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page sitting at the top of the list with 3/1 odds from Ladbrokes.

The bookies’ Alex Apati commented: “The race to play 007 is closer than ever as things stand, with three names currently heading the betting as Bond chiefs continue to search for Daniel Craig’s replacement.”

Could the star break the mould and become the first Black actor to take on the iconic role?

James Bond No Time To Die is due out on September 30, 2021.
