Lewis Hamilton crashed in the Emilia Romagna GP as he was chasing down Max Verstappen which led to the eventual red flag of the race. The Mercedes driver had just changed on to slick tyres and was closing in on his rival before he ended up in the gravel trap.
Hamilton was trying to get by lapped cars quickly to not lose any advantage and lost control of his Mercedes.
Instead of reversing he crucially tried to spin the car round but got wedged into the barrier before he eventually managed to carry on.
The race was then red-flagged a lap later as George Russell and Valtteri Bottas were involved in a major collision at full speed with both of them blaming one another.
Debris was left everywhere across the track forcing a stoppage in proceedings.
Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer was surprised by the error from Hamilton.
He said: “It was an uncharacteristic mistake from Hamilton.
“He was desperate to pass the back markers.
“He got on a wet patch and slithered off. He has had a reprieve with the red flag.”
There are now 17 cars remaining in the Emilia Romagna GP with Verstappen leading for Red Bull.
Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris are in the podium positions at present with the race set to restart.
It has been a weekend to forget for Bottas who was once again outclassed by his team-mate Hamilton.
The events of the race have created a real opportunity for Verstappen and Red Bull to put a marker down this season and get a crucial race victory.
Hamilton will look to make his way through the field and limit the damage.
