Manchester United are into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a comfortable win over Luton Town to kickstart their season. Juan Mata scored a penalty in the first-half as Donny Van de Beek made his full debut while Marcus Rashford grabbed one late on.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted to see his side make it through to the next round of the Carabao Cup relatively unscathed during a testing week.

The loss to Crystal Palace in their opening match in the Premier League has sucked out all the optimism at Old Trafford.

And with the Red Devils under the microscope, they emerged victorious over a Luton side that were unbeaten in five matches this campaign already.

It was by no means a thumping display by the Premier League giants but was more than enough to secure the win necessary with no complaints.

Mata got the match up and running late in the first half after netting from the penalty following a foul on Brandon Williams.

Man Utd player ratings

Henderson – 6

Making his full debut for United and could not have asked for an easier evening. One hairy moment but he made a fine save at his near post.

Wan-Bissaka – 6

Still yet to get up to full match fitness and would be happy to have 90 minutes under his belt.

Bailly – 6

A rare outing for the Ivorian and looked resilient. Secret answer to United’s defensive woes?

Maguire – 7

Looked classy and a step above, making it impossible for Luton to get through a sneaky goal.

Williams – 6

Won the penalty in the first half but a yellow after the break saw him rein himself in a bit.

Mata – 8

Best player on the pitch, orchestrating throughout the match with some delightful passes. Got the goal from the penalty spot.

Lingard – 5

Tried a little too hard at times to make something out of nothing when the simpler option would have been the better one.

Ighalo – 5

Largely anonymous, United would have done better with a more mobile striker to feed off the likes of Van de Beek and Mata.

SUBS: Rashford (7), Fernandes (5), Greenwood (8).
