Man Utd transfer news: Jorge Mendes can help save £100m on Erling Haaland alternative | Football | Sport

With Erling Haaland’s price-tag set at a minimum of £128million this summer, it’s already perhaps time Manchester United started to explore alternatives. For one reason or another, the Red Devils failed to conclude a deal back in December 2019 when Haaland was available for just £18m during his time at Red Bull Salzburg.

Fast-forward nearly around 15 months and the auction for Haaland is set to commence at around six times that.

For a club currently hampered by the financial constraints of the pandemic, it’s fair to say Haaland’s valuation may be out of United’s range.

Not only that but the base figure is expected to be where clubs start the bidding and given the superpowers involved, there’s every chance the final figure could be much closer to £150m.

There’s no doubt that this would be a game-changing acquisition for United or any interested party but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also needs to invest in other areas of his squad.

He won’t be able to do that if he blows his entire budget on a reunion with the 20-year-old he managed at Molde.

United is the perfect fit for Silva in the sense that they play on the deck and in behind. It’s an environment where he can flourish.

Bruno Fernandes of course knows him well from the national team where Silva is now becoming a key figure after years of uncertainty.

He’s a player that thrives on confidence and at Frankfurt he’s been told he’s the main man. United are now looking for a new striker to depend on.

Edinson Cavani was a hero at Old Trafford at the turn of the year, when his United career exploded into life.

The veteran was scoring and playing regularly but injuries halted his moment before his father Luis confirmed his son wanted to return to South America.

Since then, Cavani’s form has plummeted while his involvement has deteriorated. United are still missing that piece of the jigsaw.

Haaland is a pipe dream, particularly with a right-winger, centre-back and possibly goalkeeper on the agenda.

Not only that but Mino Raiola’s relationship with United is currently frosty to say the least.

He’s unlikely to do United any favours when push comes to shove following a series of disagreements regarding Paul Pogba’s future.

Meanwhile, fellow super-agent Mendes has maintained a strong professional relationship with the club and looks willing to do business again.

Frankfurt are unlikely to demand upwards of £50m and once Haaland’s fate is sealed, the Portuguese striker’s availability is likely to be a hot topic of conversation alongside Sergio Aguero.

Silva fits the recruitment model that Solskjaer has pioneered like a glove. Missing out on Haaland may not necessarily be a bad thing after all.
