Manchester United are eager to sign a new central midfielder this summer and have been linked with West Ham star Declan Rice, but Dimitar Berbatov believes his old club should look at Kalvin Phillips instead.

Phillips has shone during the European Championship having started every England game so far.

The midfielder has played in a double pivot with Rice, and has played a key role in the Three Lions’ journey to the final.

Phillips was also an integral figure in Leeds’ Premier League return, having cemented his place as one of Marcelo Bielsa’s favoured players.

And Berbatov believes he could be the perfect man to fill the void in the midfield at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be eager to replace Fred this summer, and has already identified Rice as a potential target.

Eduardo Camavinga has also been looked at, and the Rennes wonderkid could be signed for just £25million this summer.

United are believed to be closing in on signing the teenager, keeping their free-spending approach to the transfer market going after their £73m move for Jadon Sancho.

Writing in his column for Betfair, Berbatov explained that he thinks Phillips is the ideal player for United.

“Kalvin Phillips stood out again too [in the win over Denmark],” Berbatov said.

“He’s been one of the players of the tournament and, sooner or later, I expect him to leave Leeds for a bigger club. Offers will come in for him after the tournament.

“He is playing with maturity, agility, knowing when to run with the ball and when to pass.

“I would like to see him sign for Manchester United.”
