Olly Murs health: Singer opens up about anxiety issues and how to overcome

Olly Murs has been catapulted to success after his stint in X Factor many years ago and his career has gone from strength to strength. The star is often seen with a cheeky grin and a carefree attitude which has helped with popularity. However, he, like so many others, also struggles with difficult days and admits his mental health can be challenging at times. During his set at Gloucester’s Kingsholm Stadium last year, while introducing one song, Olly admitted that he’s struggled with his mental health.

Anxiety can manifest itself in physical and mental ways and can also affect a person’s behaviour.

A person with anxiety may experience physical symptoms such as a faster, irregular or more noticeable heartbeat, feeling lightheaded and dizzy, headaches, chest pains, and loss of appetite.

Mental symptoms include feeling tense or nervous, being unable to relax, worrying about the past or future, feeling tearful, and not being able to sleep.

Changes in behaviour can include not being able to enjoy your leisure time, difficulty looking after yourself, problems concentrating at work, struggling to form or maintain relationships, or being worried about trying new things.

Hypnotherapy and mental health

Hypnotherapy offers the potential to help treat your medical conditions without the need for invasive therapies or additional medications.

Therapists consider hypnotherapy a safe treatment option, with minimal side effects.

Nic Auerbach hypnotherapist at The Hypno Clinic said: “A recent meta-analysis concluded that the benefit of hypnotherapy in treating anxiety improved in more than about 84 percent of control participants”

Chris Dreyfus Gibson also from Zentrify added: “My approach combines cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and traditional coaching to help a client overcome their challenges.

“There are two important principles in how I approach helping a client, firstly education and being your ow therapist.

“My aim is to give clients the tools and techniques which they can apply for themselves, without having to rely on a therapist long term. For example, all hypnosis is in fact self-hypnosis.

“I am guiding the client to that hypnotic state of mind, but it is them doing to work and they can learn to do it without me guiding them.

“The approach works on three interconnected levels: our behaviour, our emotions, and our thoughts.

“Lasting change requires us to understand and work on each of these levels within the context of a particular challenge and depending on the context will depend on which we focus on first.

“Conditions such as anxiety, phobias, depression, addictions, or even low confidence all have behavioural, emotional, and cognitive (thinking) elements to them, which is why this holistic approach can be so impactful.”
