The most powerful passport in the world has been unveiled in a new index. New Zealand is now the proud owner of the strongest travel document, according to The Passport Index. The country had previously tied top spot with Japan but has now overtaken it.

“New Zealand’s excellent handling of the Covid-19 crisis is reflected in its citizens quickly being accepted to travel to other nations,” Hrant Boghossian, from Passport Index, told New Zealand website, Stuff.

Meanwhile, erstwhile winner Japan now shares the title of second most powerful passport with a number of other countries.

Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, South Korea and Japan all also came in second place.

The countries can all access 128 countries without a visa.
