Johnny Depp‘s future in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is up in the air right now. The actor has not been confirmed to be returning to the Disney series just yet, even though pre-production has already begun on the film’s spin-off which stars Margot Robbie. The ambiguous nature of Depp’s return stems from his very public court battle against a British tabloid and his ex-wife, Amber Heard. During this court case, the actor revealed he lost a staggering amount of money after Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End.
Depp was undoubtedly the star of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, where he played Captain Jack Sparrow.
The first film in the series earned a staggering $650 million at the box office, while the second and third movies earned an enormous $1.06 billion and $964 million respectively.
Depp previously revealed, however, that he found himself in unimaginable debt following these film releases.
Speaking out in court last year about his finances, Depp said in 2016 he was “in the early stages of learning from my recently acquired new business manager that the former business managers had taken quite a lot of my money. They stole my money”.
Depp was pressed on how much money was allegedly taken, where he explained: “It was put to me this way because I had no idea about money or amounts of money.
“Since Pirates [of the Caribbean] two and three, I had – and this is ludicrous to have to state, it’s quite embarrassing – apparently I had made $650 million.
“And when I sacked them [the business managers], for the right reasons, I had not only lost $650 million, but I was $100 million in the hole because they had not paid the government my taxes for 17 years.”
Since the Hollywood actor spoke out about his finances in court, he lost the battle against Heard and the British newspaper.
Since Depp’s exodus from the Fantastic Beasts series, he has been replaced by James Bond and Marvel star Mads Mikkelsen.
Mikkelsen recently gave an interview about replacing the legendary Pirates actor, where he touched upon his portrayal of Depp’s character.
He revealed: “I have been a fan of Johnny Depp since I saw him as a young man.
“To try to bring his intensity and his way of doing it into my work is a no-go.”
Mikkelsen continued: “I have to find my own, because his is unique, and I just have to let that be, and find a different path.”
Speaking about the state of the film, the Danish star added: “We’ve wrapped it up. Obviously, I have only been part of it for half the time that the rest of the gang has. It was a lovely experience.
“I think they had a really great script; a great, solid story. So if that is anything to measure on, I think the film will be… you know, as magical as it has to be, with all the wonderful creatures, but also quite beautiful.”
He added: “There are some really interesting, heartbreaking stories in there. And, hopefully, that will come across.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is available on Disney Plus now.
