Pirates of the Caribbean: Timothée Chalamet could claim a young Johnny Depp role | Films | Entertainment

Over the past 18 months, Johnny Depp‘s role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been left uncertain following his public civil lawsuit against a British newspaper and his wife Amber Heard. The Hollywood star fought claims he was a “wife-beater”. This event prompted his exit from the Harry Potter series Fantastic Beasts, where he played Gellert Grindelwald. Rumours have since surfaced that he would be removed from the Disney series as well, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Although Depp’s position in the series is up in the air, a Jack Sparrow replacement could still happen.

This week it was announced a prequel film to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is in development.

This film, titled Wonka, will showcase the origin story of Willy Wonka, the eccentric candy creator.

The role of the titular character will be played by Academy Award Nominee Timothée Chalamet.

Chalamet will be playing a younger version of Depp’s Wonka, who he portrayed in the 2005 film.

At the time, critics panned Depp’s portrayal of the quirky chocolate factory owner.

Roger Ebert commented: “What was Depp thinking of? In Pirates of the Caribbean he was famously channelling Keith Richards, which may have primed us to look for possible inspirations for this performance.”

This will not be the first time Chalamet has taken part in a new version of one of Depp’s characters.

Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie has already confirmed a new version of the POTC is on the way, so things are slowly changing.

Robbie herself is playing a new pirate and is leading the upcoming movie.

Other than her involvement, no news has been given about the new Pirates movie.

However, the series is certainly not complete without Jack Sparrow, so a younger, less refined version of him could be on the cards.

As a young up-and-coming actor Chalamet could be the perfect cast for a new version of Sparrow.

However, with the hit science fiction film Dune coming up, Chalamet could be busy for the next few years.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
