Ryanair: Passenger shares hand luggage tip to beat excess bag fees | Travel News | Travel

Travelling with hand luggage only is a great way to save on checked luggage fees. However, it can also mean that some holidaymakers are caught out if the amount of hand luggage they have exceeds the airline’s specified amount.

This can come with a much higher fee at the last minute than if it was done in advance online.

Customers may find themselves shelling out as much as £11 per kilogram for excess baggage at the airport.

It can also cost up to £50 to check luggage into the hold at the airport.

Of course, another way to reduce the risk is to be strategic about the items you take away with you.

“I always like to lay out all of my clothes and take a photo before I pack them!” wrote another frequent flier.

“Then you have a reference for future packing, and it helps you double-check that you have everything you wanted and that you didn’t, for instance, only pack blue clothing.”

Travellers also recommend avoiding certain types of clothing which could take up more space or increase the weight of bags.

“Leave all the denim at home, unless you wear it on the plane.

“It’s heavy and takes up a lot of space,” urged one traveller.

“Reduce the number of shoes as much as possible.

“You don’t need anything super dressy unless you’re going to a formal event, and you don’t need a different pair of shoes for every outfit.”

They also suggested opting for garments that can be mixed and matched to create new ensembles.

“Pack all neutral colours – black, white, grey, beige),” they added.
