Sophie, Countess of Wessex: Royal ‘happy’ to ‘take the lead’ in marriage with Edward

Having turned her attention to online virtual calls throughout the pandemic, the royal and her husband recently kickstarted their in-person appearances.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James explained that their marriage has not only lasted but has also “thrived”.

She said: “Sophie’s body language has always oozed an upbeat sense of reassurance and continuity and since Edward has been making more appearances of late, he has also been revealing what seems to be a very likeable and uplifting personality.

“Both reflect the stoic attitude that the Queen has made her signature look throughout her reign and, like The Queen and Prince Philip, both manage to project an air of happiness in one another’s company as well as working competently apart too.

“Edward tends to have inherited the same Windsor trait of shyness and self-comfort, anxiety rituals as Charles and William and, rather like Kate, Sophie appears to be adept at offering quiet, flattering, confidence-boosting body language signals to boost him up in public.

“They look like a team and when they appear with their two children that team dynamic, with Sophie taking the role of team leader, looks natural and easy-going enough but with no soap-opera-style body language leakage to suggest any dramas behind the scenes.”

The couple have two children together, Lady Louise Windsor, 17, and James Viscount Severn, 13.

Their lives are kept quite privately but will often appear with their parents for royal engagements.

The last time the family were seen together was last year when they headed to Southsea beach for the beach clean up.

Judi added: “If there is a role for the royals to play right now it is to offer the reassurance of continuity to a country suffering through a pandemic and Sophie and Edward seem perfectly suited to that task with their upbeat smiles and acts of ongoing affection offering a subtle morale-booster.

“After a flurry of public and media interest during and soon after their marriage, Edward and Sophie appeared to slip into the more low-key family lifestyle that other royals like William and even Charles appeared to crave.

“Sophie might have been labelled ‘The New Diana’ at the start of their marriage but her almost total lack of dramas and storylines meant less scrutiny of their relationship.

“However, there was also a general assumption that, like the marriages of all of his siblings, Edward’s would hit the buffers sooner rather than later.”

The royal couple will often be seen laughing and joking together in public.

Judi went on: “It’s been a happy surprise then to find that Edward and Sophie currently appear to be in a royal marriage that has not only lasted but thrived.

“Unlike Charles and Diana, the couple seem to have got their power balance right together, with Edward often looking happy to see Sophie take the lead and the lion’s share of the attention, and unlike Anne and first husband Mark or Andrew and Fergie their compatibility signals appear strong.”
