Tottenham news: Jose Mourinho turns focus to Europa League amid Champions League pressure | F1 | Sport

Spurs fans are becoming increasingly disenchanted with their team’s style of play and Daniel Levy has made no secret of the demand to host regular Champions League football in the impressive new stadium.

So now Mourinho has targeted the Europa League as a way of appeasing supporters by giving them the silverware they have lacked for so long while at the same time meeting his chairman’s demands via the back door.

That is with their Premier League form dire, three losses on the bounce and just two wins from their last 10, and top-four hopes

Tottenham travel to Wolfsberg in Austria on February 18 with the return six days later with a place in the last 16 of the competition up for grabs.

Following the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, which leaves them seven points from fourth place, Mourinho was already focused on European football returning, even though Spurs have two more Premier League games and an FA Cup clash before then.

“The Europa League is a big competition for us, we have good expectations in that competition,” Mourinho, who won the competition with Porto and Manchester United, said.

“It is something that, since the beginning, we have put a lot on.

“I cannot forget that we had to play how many games to qualify for the group phase, and games with two days in between, travelling around Europe to do it.

“So we want, the team wants, the team is waiting for that, and maybe the squad needs that.”

Mourinho admits he is under pressure after three successive league defeats – Spurs’ worst run for nine years.

But he pointed out it is a longer wait, back to 2008, since Spurs won their last trophy.

“I put pressure on myself every day,” he said. “I don’t need others to put pressure on me. I put pressure on myself every day. Every day.

“So since 2012 without three defeats in a row? But since when without a title? Maybe I can give one.”
