Passengers required to stay in a quarantine hotel will need to reserve a room online in advance, with the booking system opening on Thursday.

Travellers will be forced to foot the bill for the hotel stay themselves, however, and will cost a whopping £1,750 fee which includes the hotel, transfer and testing.

The Health Secretary said: “Before they travel, they will have to book, through an online platform, and pay for a quarantine package, costing £1,750 for an individual travelling alone, which includes the hotel, transport and testing.”

These travellers will only be allowed to enter the UK through a “small number of ports that currently account for the vast majority of passenger arrivals”, Mr Hancock added.
